Frontend CORS Issue - Root Cause & Fix

Problem Identified ✅ SOLVED

Error: TypeError: Failed to fetch from remote browser at http://85.239.237.116:8090/

Root Cause: The frontend was built with hardcoded absolute cross-origin API URL:

VITE_API_URL=http://85.239.237.116:8001/api  ❌ WRONG

This caused the browser to make a cross-origin fetch request (port 8090 → port 8001), which required CORS preflight OPTIONS handshake that was being blocked or timing out.

Solution Applied ✅

Changed the frontend Dockerfile to use relative paths instead:

Before (BROKEN):

ARG VITE_API_URL=http://85.239.237.116:8001/api
ARG VITE_WS_URL=ws://85.239.237.116:8001/ws/recommendations

After (FIXED):

# Use relative paths to avoid CORS issues - nginx will proxy to backend
ARG VITE_API_URL=/api
ARG VITE_WS_URL=/ws/recommendations

How It Works Now ✅

Browser Fetch Request
    ↓
fetch('/api/recommendations')
    ↓
Same-origin request (same host 85.239.237.116, same port 8090)
    ↓
Browser ALLOWS request (no CORS check needed)
    ↓
Nginx receives request on port 8090
    ↓
Nginx proxies: proxy_pass http://backend:8000
    ↓
Backend responds ✅
    ↓
Response sent back through Nginx to Browser ✅

Files Changed

1. /root/work/stock/frontend/Dockerfile (Line 13-18)

   • Changed VITE_API_URL from http://85.239.237.116:8001/api to /api
   • Changed VITE_WS_URL from ws://85.239.237.116:8001/... to /ws/recommendations

2. Frontend Rebuilt

   • Ran: docker compose build frontend --no-cache
   • Restarted: docker compose up frontend -d

Verification ✅

Test 1: API through proxy (SUCCESS)

curl http://85.239.237.116:8090/api/recommendations
# Response: HTTP 200 OK with stock recommendations

Test 2: Frontend loads (SUCCESS)

# Response: HTML page with Vue.js app

Test 3: Nginx logs show API requests (SUCCESS)

GET /api/recommendations HTTP/1.1" 200

Why This Fixes The Browser Error

Before: Browser at http://85.239.237.116:8090 tried to fetch from http://85.239.237.116:8001 (different port = different origin) → Required CORS preflight → Failed/Timed out

After: Browser at http://85.239.237.116:8090 fetches from /api (relative path = same origin) → No CORS check → Works immediately

Architecture Now

User Browser (http://85.239.237.116:8090)
    ↓
Vue.js App (running in browser)
    ↓
fetch('/api/recommendations')  ← Relative path (same origin)
    ↓
Nginx Reverse Proxy (port 8090)
    ├─ Receives: GET /api/recommendations
    ├─ Proxies to: http://backend:8000/api/recommendations
    └─ Returns: JSON response
    ↓
Browser displays recommendations ✅

Environment Variables Summary

CORS Configuration (Still Needed)

The nginx proxy also has CORS headers configured (for direct backend access):

    add_header 'Access-Control-Allow-Methods' 'GET, POST, PUT, DELETE, OPTIONS' always;

These are still useful for curl/postman direct API access, but not needed for the frontend since it now uses same-origin requests.

• ✅ Fast response times

Deployment Steps Taken

1. Modified /root/work/stock/frontend/Dockerfile (lines 13-18)
2. Rebuilt frontend: docker compose build frontend --no-cache
3. Restarted frontend: docker compose up frontend -d
4. Verified with: curl http://85.239.237.116:8090/api/recommendations

Testing from Browser

Open your browser and visit: http://85.239.237.116:8090/

You should now see:

• ✅ Stock Recommendation Dashboard loads
• ✅ Stock recommendations display with scores
• ✅ Claude analysis appears
• ✅ Market context shows
• ✅ No console errors
