# Claude Code Router - Improvements Summary
## Overview
This document outlines the improvements made to transform the initial `run-claude-openrouter.sh` script into a production-ready system with automatic startup, secure configuration, and comprehensive management capabilities.
## Problems Solved
### 1. ❌ No Automatic System Restart
**Problem:** CCR could not auto-start after system reboot; manual intervention required every restart.
**Solution:**
- Created `com.musistudio.ccr.plist` - LaunchAgent for system boot auto-start
- CCR automatically launches when user logs in
- Configuration automatically loaded from persistent `.env` file
**Validation:**
```bash
launchctl list com.musistudio.ccr
# Shows: 0 com.musistudio.ccr
```
### 2. ❌ Unsafe API Key Management
**Problem:** Original script had no secure storage; API keys could be exposed in shell history or plain text.
**Solution:**
- Created `config-manager.sh` - Secure configuration management module
- API keys stored in `~/.claude-code-router/.env` with 600 permissions (owner-only read/write)
- Keys auto-loaded from file on each startup
- Keys never exported to shell history
**Security Features:**
- File permissions: 600 (owner read/write only)
- Masked output when displaying keys
- Environment isolation with LaunchAgent
- No keys in git (excluded by `.gitignore` recommendation)
### 3. ❌ Configuration Lost After Restart
**Problem:** Configuration existed only in memory; lost after logout/restart.
**Solution:**
- `config-manager.sh` persists all configuration to `~/.claude-code-router/.env`
- LaunchAgent reads this file on each startup
- Configuration auto-loaded in every session
- Backup and recovery capabilities provided
### 4. ❌ Multiple CCR Instances Could Run
**Problem:** No guarantee of single instance; user could accidentally start multiple CCRs.
**Solution:**
- LaunchAgent configured with `<key>SingleInstance</key><true/>`
- Prevents duplicate processes
- Automatic cleanup if crashed
**Configuration:**
```xml
<key>SingleInstance</key>
<true/>
```
### 5. ❌ Poor Diagnostics & Troubleshooting
**Problem:** No status checking, logs not easily accessible, configuration validation missing.
**Solution:**
- Added `--status` command with comprehensive information display
- Added `--logs` command for real-time log viewing
- Added `--validate` command for configuration validation
- Smoke tests on startup verify service is responding
**Example Output:**
```bash
$ ./run-claude-openrouter.sh --status
==> Claude Code Router Status
==========================
✅ Status: Running
Configuration:
OPENROUTER_API_KEY: sk-or-...***...***1234
LaunchAgent Status:
✓ LaunchAgent installed
✓ LaunchAgent is loaded
```
### 6. ❌ Incomplete Setup Process
**Problem:** Original script didn't ensure all dependencies or fail gracefully.
**Solution:**
- Enhanced setup with proper dependency checking
- Validates configuration before completing setup
- Provides clear success/failure messages
- Lists next steps explicitly
### 7. ❌ No Configuration Management CLI
**Problem:** Users couldn't easily update API keys without editing files manually.
**Solution:**
- Created `ccr-config.sh` - Configuration management utility
- Provides CLI interface for key management
- Commands: `set-key`, `get-key`, `show`, `validate`, `reset`
**Usage:**
```bash
./ccr-config.sh set-key openrouter "sk-or-v1-new-key"
./ccr-config.sh show
./ccr-config.sh validate
```
## Architecture Improvements

## Technical Details
### Security Model
```
API Key Flow:
1. User exports: export OPENROUTER_API_KEY='sk-or-...'
2. Setup saves to: ~/.claude-code-router/.env (mode 600)
3. LaunchAgent sources: ~/.claude-code-router/.env
4. CCR receives: OPENROUTER_API_KEY environment variable
5. API requests: HTTPS to OpenRouter (encrypted)
```
### Auto-Start Process
```
1. System Reboot
2. macOS loads LaunchAgent (~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.musistudio.ccr.plist)
3. LaunchAgent executes: bash -c "source ~/.claude-code-router/.env && ccr start"
4. Environment variables loaded from .env
5. CCR daemon starts with API keys
6. Ready for use
```
### Single Instance Guarantee
```
LaunchAgent Configuration:
- Label: com.musistudio.ccr
- SingleInstance: true
- KeepAlive: true (with SuccessfulExit: false)
- ThrottleInterval: 5
Result:
- Only one CCR process can run
- Automatically restarts if it crashes
- Prevents duplicate instances
```
## Backwards Compatibility
The new system is **fully backwards compatible**:
- Original `run-claude-openrouter.sh` functionality preserved
- All new features are additions, not replacements
- Users can still manually manage configuration if desired
- Manual API key specification still works via environment variables
## Testing Checklist

./run-claude-openrouter.sh --validate
# Uninstall (removes LaunchAgent + stops service)
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --uninstall
```
### Configuration Management
```bash
# Show all configured API keys (masked)
./ccr-config.sh show
# Set API key
./ccr-config.sh set-key openrouter "sk-or-v1-..."
# Validate configuration
./ccr-config.sh validate
# Show configuration directory
./ccr-config.sh path
# Reset all configuration
./ccr-config.sh reset
```
## 🏗️ Architecture
### Directory Structure
```
~/.claude-code-router/
├── .env # Configuration (API keys)
├── ccr.log # Stdout logs
├── ccr-error.log # Stderr logs
├── claude-code-router.log # Detailed logs
└── .claude-code-router.pid # Process ID
```
### Security Model
- **File Permissions**: Config files use 600 (owner only)
- **No History**: API keys not stored in shell history
- **Masked Display**: Configuration display masks API keys
- **Environment Isolation**: LaunchAgent gets fresh environment each session
### Auto-Start Mechanism
1. LaunchAgent plist installed at `~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.musistudio.ccr.plist`
2. macOS loads it at user login
3. `run-claude-openrouter.sh` sources `.env` file to load config
4. CCR daemon starts with OpenRouter backend
5. Automatically restarts if it crashes
## 🔧 Troubleshooting
### Issue: Setup fails with "OPENROUTER_API_KEY not set"
**Solution:**
```bash
export OPENROUTER_API_KEY='sk-or-v1-your-key'
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --setup
```
### Issue: CCR not starting automatically after reboot
**Check LaunchAgent status:**
```bash
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --status
launchctl list com.musistudio.ccr
```
**If needed, reload LaunchAgent:**
```bash
launchctl unload ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.musistudio.ccr.plist
launchctl load ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.musistudio.ccr.plist
```
### Issue: Service responding slowly or timing out
**Check logs:**
```bash
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --logs
```
**Restart service:**
```bash
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --stop
sleep 2
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --daemon
```
### Issue: Multiple CCR instances running
**Kill all and restart:**
```bash
pkill -f "ccr start"
sleep 2
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --daemon
```
## 📚 Advanced Usage
### Manual Configuration
If you prefer manual setup:
```bash
mkdir -p ~/.claude-code-router
chmod 700 ~/.claude-code-router
cat > ~/.claude-code-router/.env << 'EOF'
OPENROUTER_API_KEY='sk-or-v1-your-key'
ANTHROPIC_API_KEY='placeholder'
EOF
chmod 600 ~/.claude-code-router/.env
```
### Custom Port
Edit the `com.musistudio.ccr.plist` file and add environment variables:
```xml
<key>EnvironmentVariables</key>
<dict>
<key>CCR_PORT</key>
<string>3457</string>
</dict>
```
### Debug Mode
Enable debug output:
```bash
DEBUG=1 ./run-claude-openrouter.sh --daemon
```
## 🔐 Security Considerations
### API Key Safety
- Never commit `.env` to version control
- Use `.gitignore` to exclude `~/.claude-code-router/`
- Keys are only readable by the owner (600 permissions)
- LaunchAgent only executes for the logged-in user
### Network Security
- CCR listens on 127.0.0.1:3456 (localhost only)
- No exposure to network unless explicitly configured
- HTTPS to OpenRouter API (encrypted in transit)
## 📊 Monitoring
### View Logs
```bash
# Real-time tail
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --logs
# View last N lines
tail -50 ~/.claude-code-router/claude-code-router.log
# Search logs
grep ERROR ~/.claude-code-router/claude-code-router.log
```
### Check Status
```bash
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --status
ccr status
ps aux | grep ccr
```
### Performance
```bash
# Check process memory/CPU
ps aux | grep ccr
# Monitor in real-time
top -p $(pgrep -f "ccr start")
```
## 🧹 Maintenance
### Backup Configuration
```bash
cp ~/.claude-code-router/.env ~/.claude-code-router/.env.backup
```
### Update API Key
```bash
./ccr-config.sh set-key openrouter "sk-or-v1-new-key"
```
### Clean Old Logs
```bash
# The system auto-rotates logs, but you can manually clean old ones
rm -f ~/.claude-code-router/ccr.log.*
```
## 🚀 Uninstall
To remove the system completely:
```bash
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --uninstall
```
This will:
- Stop the CCR service
- Remove LaunchAgent
- Preserve configuration directory for recovery
To restore, run setup again.
## 📞 Support
### Helpful Commands for Troubleshooting
```bash
# Check everything
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --status
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --validate
# View diagnostic information
./ccr-config.sh show
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --logs
# Manual checks
ccr status
launchctl list com.musistudio.ccr

# Claude Code Router - Complete Setup Guide
This guide walks you through setting up Claude Code Router with automatic system startup, secure configuration management, and single-instance guarantees.
## What This System Provides
1. **🔒 Secure Configuration Management**
- API keys stored securely in `~/.claude-code-router/.env`
- File permissions locked down (600)
- Auto-loaded on every startup
2. **🚀 Automatic System Startup**
- LaunchAgent ensures CCR starts automatically on system boot
- Single instance guarantee - only one CCR process runs at a time
- Self-healing - automatically restarts if it crashes
3. **⚡ Easy Interactive Usage**
- Load configuration automatically
- One command to start Claude Code with OpenRouter backend
- Health checks and diagnostics
## Prerequisites
- macOS 13.0+ (for LaunchAgent support)
- Node.js 18+ and npm
- curl (usually pre-installed)
## Installation & Setup
### Step 1: Clone/Download the Scripts
Ensure you have these files in a directory (e.g., `~/claude-code-router/`):
- `run-claude-openrouter.sh`
- `config-manager.sh`
- `com.musistudio.ccr.plist`
- `ccr-config.sh` (optional, for configuration management)
```bash
cd ~/claude-code-router
chmod +x *.sh
```
### Step 2: Initial Configuration
Export your OpenRouter API key and run the setup:
```bash
export OPENROUTER_API_KEY='sk-or-v1-your-actual-key-here'
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --setup
```
This will:
- ✅ Check and install npm packages (ccr, claude)
- ✅ Store your API key securely in `~/.claude-code-router/.env`
- ✅ Install LaunchAgent for automatic startup
- ✅ Validate the configuration
### Step 3: Verify Setup
Check that everything is configured correctly:
```bash
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --status
```
You should see:
- ✓ CCR running status
- ✓ Configuration details (keys masked)
- ✓ LaunchAgent installed and loaded
## Usage
### Start Claude Code (Interactive)
```bash
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --code
```
This will:
1. Load your configuration automatically
2. Start CCR daemon if not running
3. Launch Claude Code CLI
4. Set the OpenRouter model as default
**Tip:** In the Claude Code REPL, you can switch models with:
```
/model openrouter,anthropic/claude-sonnet-4.5
```
### Start CCR as Daemon (Background)
```bash
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --daemon
```
Runs CCR in the background without entering the Claude Code REPL.
### Check Service Status
```bash
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --status
```
Shows:
- Current CCR running status
- Configuration details (API keys masked)
- LaunchAgent status
### View Logs
```bash
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --logs
```
Tail the CCR logs in real-time. Press Ctrl+C to exit.
### Manage Configuration
```bash
# Show current configuration (masked)
./ccr-config.sh show
# Set API key manually
./ccr-config.sh set-key openrouter "sk-or-v1-..."
# Validate configuration
./ccr-config.sh validate
# Show config directory path
./ccr-config.sh path
```
### Stop the Service
```bash
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --stop
```
## Automatic Startup After System Reboot
Once setup is complete, CCR will automatically start when your Mac boots up.
**How it works:**
- LaunchAgent is installed at `~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.musistudio.ccr.plist`
- macOS launches it automatically at login
- Configuration is automatically loaded from `~/.claude-code-router/.env`
**To verify auto-startup is working:**
1. Restart your Mac
2. Open Terminal
3. Run: `ccr status`
4. You should see CCR is already running
## Architecture
### Directory Structure
```
~/.claude-code-router/
├── .env # Configuration file (mode 600)
├── com.musistudio.ccr.plist # LaunchAgent plist
├── ccr.log # CCR stdout logs
├── ccr-error.log # CCR stderr logs
├── claude-code-router.log # Detailed CCR logs
└── .claude-code-router.pid # Process ID file
```
### Security Features
- **File Permissions**: Config files are 600 (owner read/write only)
- **No API Keys in Shell History**: Keys only in env file, not exported
- **Environment Isolation**: Each launchd session gets fresh config
- **Masked Output**: Configuration display masks most of API key
### Single Instance Guarantee
The LaunchAgent plist includes:
```xml
<key>SingleInstance</key>
<true/>
```
This ensures:
- Only one CCR process runs at a time
- If you manually start CCR while one is running, it properly stops the old one
- System reboot doesn't create duplicate instances
## Troubleshooting
### Issue: "OPENROUTER_API_KEY not set" during setup
**Solution:** Export the key before running setup:
```bash
export OPENROUTER_API_KEY='sk-or-v1-your-key'
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --setup
```
### Issue: CCR not starting automatically after reboot
**Solution:** Check LaunchAgent status:
```bash
# Verify plist is installed
ls -la ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.musistudio.ccr.plist
# Check if loaded
launchctl list com.musistudio.ccr
# Manual load if needed
launchctl load ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.musistudio.ccr.plist
```
### Issue: Configuration lost after restart
**Solution:** Verify `.env` file exists:
```bash
cat ~/.claude-code-router/.env
```
If missing, reconfigure:
```bash
export OPENROUTER_API_KEY='sk-or-v1-your-key'
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --setup
```
### Issue: Smoke test failing
**Solution:** Check CCR logs:
```bash
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --logs
```
Or view the log file directly:
```bash
tail -f ~/.claude-code-router/claude-code-router.log
```
### Issue: Multiple CCR instances running
**Solution:** Stop all and restart:
```bash
pkill -f "ccr start"
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --daemon
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --status
```
## Maintenance
### Regular Usage Checklist
- ✅ Don't manually edit `.env` file - use `ccr-config.sh`
- ✅ Check logs periodically if issues occur
- ✅ Keep your API key secret - never commit `.env` to git
### Backup Configuration
```bash
cp ~/.claude-code-router/.env ~/.claude-code-router/.env.backup
```
### Uninstall (if needed)
```bash
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --uninstall
```
This will:
- Stop the CCR service
- Remove LaunchAgent
- Preserve configuration directory for data recovery
## Advanced: Manual Configuration
If you prefer to manage configuration manually:
```bash
mkdir -p ~/.claude-code-router
chmod 700 ~/.claude-code-router
cat > ~/.claude-code-router/.env << 'EOF'
OPENROUTER_API_KEY='sk-or-v1-your-key'
ANTHROPIC_API_KEY='placeholder'
EOF
chmod 600 ~/.claude-code-router/.env
```
Then run:
```bash
./run-claude-openrouter.sh --daemon
```
## Support
For issues or questions:
1. Check logs: `./run-claude-openrouter.sh --logs`
2. Validate config: `./run-claude-openrouter.sh --validate`
3. Check status: `./run-claude-openrouter.sh --status`
